Accelerating Underground Infrastructure in the Energy Transition

The energy transition demands speed. More capacity on the electricity grid, new cables and pipelines, expansion of existing networks, and space for sustainable energy sources. In theory, the direction is clear. In practice, however, progress often stalls underground: in design, permitting, coordination with the surrounding community, and the cohesion between parties.

From Ambition to Execution

Movares works on complex infrastructure and energy challenges throughout the Netherlands. The focus here is not only on technology, but primarily on enabling execution. For acceleration means more than working harder: it requires smart choices, integrated designs, and early coordination with all involved parties.

Within underground infrastructure, Movares supports clients and contractors with:

• designing cable and pipeline routes,
• obtaining permits,
• organizing environmental management,
• and creating support among stakeholders.

It is precisely this combination that ensures projects actually move from the drawing board to execution.

Grid Expansion as a Core Task

The electricity grid is under pressure, and expansion is inevitable. At the same time, available space is limited, and complexity underground is growing. Movares is closely involved in large-scale grid expansion projects, collaborating with contractors, grid operators, and other chain partners. By taking an integrated approach to design, permits, and the environment, room for acceleration is created. Experience from large-scale projects in the Northern Netherlands shows that scaling up is possible, provided processes are well-structured and collaboration is central.

Dealing with grid congestion

In addition to physical grid expansion, grid congestion plays an increasingly important role. Industry, large consumers, and area developments are running into limitations regarding available capacity. Movares supports the exploration and design of solutions, such as smart grid structures and energy hubs, in which supply and demand are better aligned. These issues directly affect the subsurface and require close collaboration between technology, policy, and the environment. Here, too, acceleration is only possible when parties join forces early on.

A broad view of energy infrastructure

Although underground infrastructure and grid expansion are central to InfraNXT, the energy transition impacts multiple domains.

Movares therefore also works on:

• heat transition and heat plans for municipalities,
• high-voltage infrastructure and standardization,
• green gas and its integration into existing networks.

This broad expertise ensures that Movares does not view matters from a single discipline, but connects various energy flows and scales. This is essential in an increasingly congested subsurface.

Accelerating together

InfraNXT is not a platform for isolated solutions, but a meeting place for collaboration. We believe that acceleration is only possible if parties understand and reinforce each other: clients, contractors, engineering firms, and government authorities.

During InfraNXT, we are eager to discuss:

• how underground infrastructure can be designed more intelligently,
• where processes are currently slowing down and how this can be changed,
• and how collaboration within the chain contributes to both speed and quality.

Not with a standard narrative, but based on practical experience and concrete issues.

Movares at InfraNXT By sharing knowledge, exchanging experiences, and forging new connections, we work together on a future-proof subsurface that enables the energy transition.
