On the outskirts of Maastricht, opposite Frontenpark, lies one of the region’s largest pump stations, handling wastewater from approximately 41,000 residents (around 24,000 households) every day. Due to aging valves, several components of the station were renovated in 2025. For Waterschap Limburg, safety and operational continuity were the top priorities during this upgrade.
In collaboration with main contractor GW Leidingtechniek and with AVK Netherlands products, an innovative and practical solution was implemented. The old system frequently experienced disruptions caused by wipes and other debris accumulating around the check valves, leading to repeated manual interventions by maintenance staff.
“Ensuring the safety of our technicians and the reliable operation of the Veemarkt pump station was our top priority,” explains Gijs Bles of Waterschap Limburg. “The previous check valves caused frequent failures and required extensive manual maintenance. With the installation of new AVK valves, we successfully tackled these challenges, creating a safer and more efficient system.”
